Who We Think We Are is my debut novel, but the journey to this book began long before I ever sat down to write. I grew up hearing bits and pieces of my parents’ childhood stories—both of them raised in Nazi-occupied Netherlands during World War II. The details were sparse, sometimes heavy, and always stayed with me.

Years later, what started as an attempt to record those family stories became something much bigger. After a heartfelt conversation with my mom, I felt a pull to explore the emotional weight of history—what we pass down, what we silence, and what we uncover when we start asking questions. That conversation sparked the idea for this book, and I haven't stopped writing since.

I never thought I’d write fiction—certainly not a novel. My background is in therapy and coaching, and yet somehow, those worlds came together. This book became a way to explore identity, resilience, and transformation across generations. It’s about what happens when a modern woman discovers a hidden past—and finds herself in the process.

I wrote this book during some of the hardest seasons of my life—through loss, grief, and change—and somehow, writing became a form of healing. I hope reading it offers something similar to you.
